J N Rayner was educated at Boston Grammar School (?-1968).
At BGS he was a prefect, a Sergeant in the RAF Section of the CCF and Secretary of the Geographical Society. In football he played in the U14 and U15 teams, was captain of the 1st XI and played for the Holland Boys U15 XI, gaining school colours. In athletics he competed at U17 and U20 levels, and was school captain. He also competed in cross country. He achieved 4 'O' Levels and went into employment in banking.
