Retired manager of Lloyds Bank, Winchester Street, Basingstoke, Peter Markwell Melton died suddenly at home on February 15 1995, aged 68.
He was born in Grimsby and brought up in Boston, where on leaving BGS he joined Lloyds Bank for whom he worked for 42 years in various branches throughout the country.
He married Mary in St Botolph's Church, Boston and they had one daughter, Helen.
The family moved to Basingstoke in 1973 and, because of Peter's financial background and training, he became Honorary Treasurer of many local organisations, particularly since his retirement.
He was also concerned in a number of capacities with the Rotary Club of Basingstoke of which he was president in 1986/87, Ex-Roundtables, Chamber of Commerce, Anglo-German Club, Age Concern, Business Enterprise Centre, Borough Training Committee and St. Michaels Hospice[1].
Peter was keenly interested in languages, in particular German and Dutch. He was a fluent German linguist and this led to a liking for German folk music, although his wide musical tastes embraced traditional classics and the dance band music of the 1930s.
Everyone who knew him well recognised him as a man of quiet and gentle humour with an uncannily accurate mimicking of dialects, which could be quite hilarious; a steadfast friend and, above all, a loving and caring husband and father
The funeral took place at Trinity Methodist Church[2], Sarum Hill, Basingstoke.
