Arnold Burchnall died at Pilgrim Hospital on 19 February 1978, aged 74. A retired farmer who had farmed in Freiston for many years, he was due to retire this year from his position as Clerk of the governors of Butterwick School after 41 years' service. His father, a former headmaster of the school, had held the position for the previous 20 years.
