Opening
The Art and Music Block was built in 1997. It was officially opened on 10th December 1997 by Mrs Brenda Medlock, whose husband Dr. Len Medlock, through the Len Medlock Trust, had donated £250,000 to the project.
The suite contains the following facilities, all of which are on the ground floor:
- Two spacious art classrooms with a view of the school field.
- One large music classroom.
- Five music practice rooms.
Prior to completion of this dedicated block, art and music were taught in a variety of rooms around the school.
Previous locations for teaching Art
- Pre-1985: Classroom on the north side of the Quadrangle (currently labelled Room K).
- 1985 to 1997: Design and Technology Block.
Previous locations for teaching Music
The following date ranges are approximate:
- Until mid-1960s: upstairs classroom in the south west corner of the Quadrangle (originally labelled Room M, now Room U).
- Mid-1960s to late 1970s: Pavilion.
- Late 1970s to 1988: Mobile classroom situated in the staff car park, near Rowley Road.
- 1988 to 1997: Southernmost 1st floor room of the Link Block (currently labelled Room S).
1996 archaeological survey
A preparatory archaeological survey conducted in 1996 uncovered several skeletons thought to be monks from a 13th Century Dominican Priory which stood on the site of Blackfriars Theatre until it was destroyed by fire.
