David Landale Johnston was educated at Boston Grammar School. He won the Parry Gold Medal in 1886, and also served as Head Boy.
His father was a bank accountant in Boston and later bank manager in Spalding.
Johnston was admitted pensioner at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1886. He was appointed to the Indian Civil Service in 1899, becoming district and sessions judge in 1908.
At the time of his death in 1949 he lived at Hyde Lodge, Chalford, Gloucestershire.[1]
