Dining Halls
In the 1930s and early 1940s students could eat lunch in the upstairs room in the Southwest part of the quad' which has since been known as room M and later room U.
In the latter years of Herbert Haycroft Morris, who left the school in 1945, school dinners were provided by the British Restaurant at the Guildhall, and were served in Big School to those boys requiring them.
To date the school has had two purpose-built Dining Halls.
First Dining Hall
The school's first Dining Hall, a HORSA building, was built around 1949 during Leslie Thomas Waddams' headship, and was usually referred to as the 'Canteen'. It was located close to Rowley Road, north of the Mart Yard. For the first time meals could be cooked and served on-site.
The supposedly temporary structure lasted over 30 years until it was demolished in 1984 upon completion of the second Dining Hall. The Design and Technology Block was built in its place shortly afterwards.
Second Dining Hall
Work began on a new Dining Hall in summer 1983, along with adjoining corridors to link it to the rest of the school. The block was designed by Keith Stevens and was completed in September 1984.
In the early 2010s the Dining Hall was refurbished and named "The Three Crowns", in reference to the school crest, following a student poll.
