George Bland was educated at Boston Grammar School.
Bland was born at Boston, Lincolnshire, the son of Veterinary Surgeon George Colley Bland. In the 1891 census the family was living at 5 Red Lion Street, Boston. By the time of the 1901 census the family had moved to 6 Red Lion Street.
In 1899 George Bland won Boston Grammar School's 1st Prize for Arithmetic Division II. His prize was a copy of With Kitchener to Khartum by George Warrington Steevens. The book chronicles Steevens' attachment to British forces during the Mahdist War in the Sudan. These photographs of the prize were provided by Wesley Pepperdine.
