George Smith Bagley attended Boston Grammar School from 1936 until 1941. While he was not born in Boston he lived there for over fifty years, working as a journalist for forty of them. As he recorded events of local importance over that time he developed an interest in the town's past.
He authored the first comprehensive history of Boston Grammar School, entitled Floreat Bostona, which was published in 1985. He went on to write Boston, its Story and People, which covered the history of Boston. After retiring from full-time journalism he also wrote a series of articles, entitled Lindis, for the Lincolnshire Standard Group, which focused on local history.
Bagley was for some time the editor of The Old Bostonian. He served as chairman of the Property Committee of Boston Preservation Trust.
The George Bagley Prize is named in his honour.
