Obituary - John Seymour Towell - A Retrospect

From the 1939 issue of The Bostonian, by A H

I first met him with a little group of rowing enthusiasts who regularly foregathered on winter afternoons at the Club boat-house. We were near neighbours at that time - over fifty years ago - and soon got to know each other quite well. I recall two things about him that impressed me then and have a special interest now - the pains he took to master the details of the business in which he was employed, and the wish he often expressed that he might some day have the chance to repay the debt he owed to the Grammar School. Many years later he decided for various reasons to start a business of his own; a momentous decision which brought into being a great business firm and made its founder so prominent a figure in the life of his native town. His devotion to work had won its reward: the fulfilment of his wish was not long to be delayed. He was appointed a Governor of the School, and those who worked with him on the War Memorial Committee and in the task of organising the Old Boys' Association know how greatly he contributed to the success of their joint efforts: and his election as President of the Association, in succession to Professor A J Grant, was a tribute both to his popularity and to his past services. To Old Boys everywhere news of his death brought a sense of personal loss: my own regret is deepened by the thought that of that little group of old-time friends he and I were the last survivors.
