Nick arrived at BGS in 1985 and retired in 2010. At some point during that period he and his wife Hilary Fitton spent time teaching at a school in Humberside (possibly 1991-1994).

Nick had a wide variety of interests, and contributed to numerous school clubs. A keen angler, he founded and ran the school Pike Fishing Club. In 1992 he authored a book entitled "In Search of Wild Trout: Flyfishing for Wild Trout in Rivers". Around the same time he participated in a number of instructional fishing videos.

Nick also founded the Jazz Band in 1985, in which he primarily played the banjo and ukelele.

In 2013 he was the guest of honour at the OBA Annual Dinner, delivering a speech and the toast to the school.

In 2019 he produced a book of poetry, "Knick-Knack, Union Jack: And other poems for our troubled times" which was published by former BGS staff colleague Tim Atkinson's Dotterel Press.
