Public Spirit Prize
The Public Spirit Prize was first awarded in 1924 and last awarded in 1938. It was sometimes referred to as the "Deal Public Spirit Prize", after Ezekiel James Deal - a BGS Governor who instituted it.
The following description of the prize was published in the Lincolnshire Standard in December 1928:
""The Public Spirit Prize" was originally given by Mr E J Deal, of Boston, and is annually awarded to the boy who, in the opinion of the Headmaster and assistant master, shows the best spirit in work and sport. The award is not confined solely to senior scholars, all the boys are eligible, and the best chance of securing it does not necessarily rest with the brilliant scholar. Aptitude for school work is, of course essential, but prowess at sport is also taken into consideration, as well as general "esprit de corps," and a boy's attitude to, and his popularity with, his fellow scholars. It might well be briefly described as being awarded for general behaviour."
