Thomas Bateman was appointed as headmaster of Boston Grammar School on 9 January 1759.

Terms of Appointment

A Salary of forty Pounds a Year certain and also after the Rate of twenty Shillings a Year for every Scholar as far as twenty, the number of Scholars to be ascertained at Christmas and Midsummer, when such are only to be reckoned who have been at School for three Months preceding each of these times, and observing and Subscribing the Orders made for the Government of the said School; but not to have any part of the Sallary or Prerequisite of 20s a Schollar allotted to the Undermaster for teaching Writing, etc., And that the said Master, notwithstanding an Order made on the 18th day of June 1745 shall have Liberty with the Consent of this Hall, but not otherwise, to accept of any Curacy or Ecclesiastical Preferment, and the said Master to enter upon the said School on the first day of February next, and his Sallary to Commence from Christmasday last.
