Norman Owen Haworth was a teacher of Mathematics at Boston Grammar School from 1955 to 1978.

Before BGS
He was educated at Burnley Grammar School (1932-1937). TC, Borough Road College, Isleworth; BSc, London. He was a Major with GHQ 21st Army Group and was present at Luneberg Heath when Field Marshall Montgomery accepted the German Surrender. He taught at Greaves' County Secondary School, Lancaster.

While at BGS
He was involved with the CCF (Army Section) and was Contingent Commander. He was "Major NO Haworth" before gaining the title Lt Col. He was a Boston Borough Councillor for 5 years, Secretary of the Ratepayers' Association, President of Royal British Legion, Boston Branch and husband of Margaret Haworth, Boston's first lady Mayor. He died in 1978 while still in service with the school.

Nickname
Haworth's nickname "Spiny" or "Spiny Norman" derives from a character in a Monty Python sketch, Piranha Brothers. The character, Spiny Norman, was an apparently imaginary gigantic hedgehog.

Obituary
From the 1978 issue of The Bostonian

The school was shocked and saddened by the news that Mr Haworth had died in Pilgrim Hospital on 1st October 1978 following a heart attack.

Norman Owen Haworth was born on 28th August 1920, and after attending Burnley Grammar School from 1932 to 1937, and spending a year as a student teacher, he trained as a teacher at Borough Road College, Isleworth, from 1938 to 1940.

He joined the Army in 1940 and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery three years later, joining the First Airborne Division. A year later he joined GHQ 21st Army Group as a trainee staff officer, being appointed staff Captain in 1945 and Major a year later. He was at Luneberg Heath when Field-Marshall Montgomery accepted the German surrender.

After demobilisation Mr Haworth returned to teaching, taking up an appointment at Greaves' County Secondary School, Lancaster, in 1948, and in 1952 gained the London (External) Inter B.Sc. in Pure and Applied Mathematics, and Physics. In 1951 he became general secretary of the Lancaster Schools Sports' Association and was Championship's Secretary to the English Schools Swimming Association for the 1954 national championships at Lancaster.

The C.C.F.
In April 1955 Mr Haworth was appointed to Boston Grammar School to teach Mathematics and to take over command of the C.C.F. with the rank of Captain (TA). As a classroom teacher and form-master Mr Haworth always had the interests of his pupils in mind, genuinely caring about their welfare and progress, and attempting to instil the virtues of hard work, good learning habits and thorough command of basic skills.

Many hundreds of his pupils will have had cause to thank Mr Haworth, as they continued in Sixth Form work, in higher education, or in jobs, for the foundations he helped to lay in the Lower and Middle School.

It is for his hard work with the Combined Cadet Force, however, that Lt Colonel Haworth will be remembered most. The external recognition of his contribution to the C.C.F., nationally and locally, came in the form of promotions; firstly to Major (T.A.) in 1964 and then to Lt Colonel (TA) in October, 1971, this being the highest rank possible for a C.C.F. officer. He was awarded the cadet Force Medal and, in 1977, a bar to that medal. He was elected to the Council of the C.C.F. Association, representing the East Midlands, and was chairman of the C.C.F. conference.

Camps
Hundreds of present and former members of the C.C.F., not least those who have become regular members of H.M. Forces, will remember with gratitude the opportunities to widen their experience, and to learn to meet physical and mental challenges, which came their way because of Lt-Col. Haworth's work and that of the officers who served under him; they will remember not only weekly parades and Annual Inspections but the challenge of C.C.F. camps and arduous training in such places as the hills of Scotland and the Lake District. They will appreciate how much of Lt-Col. Haworth's time and energy was spent in planning and organising these activities.

Outside the school Mr Haworth will be remembered for his work as a Town Councillor from 1961 to 1966, as Secretary of the Ratepayers Association, and as President of the Boston Branch of the Royal British Legion. Had he continued his work as a Councillor he might well have been elected Mayor in his own right, but he did have the pleasure of seeing his wife elected Mayor and being able to support her as her Consort.

We extend our sympathy to Mrs Haworth who gave full support to her husband's activities even when they must have interfered with their family life, and to his daughter Margaret &ndash; now Mrs Margaret Cox &ndash; and her husband.
Pishey Thompson (1785&ndash;1862) was at various times a teacher, a bank employee, a political advisor, and an antiquary.

Thompson was born in Freiston, near Boston, on the 18th June 1785. Orphaned at the age of seven, he was brought up by his grandparents and became a schoolmaster in Freiston in 1801. He worked in Sheath's Bank until it closed in 1814, and then went to Garfits Bank as their First Clerk; he remained in employment there until he emigrated to the United States in 1819. He had an interesting career in Washington, D.C., including terms as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and as an adviser to the United States government. Initially he prospered in America, but his business eventually failed, and he returned to England penniless in 1841. He first published a history of Boston in 1820. This was later enlarged and revised to form the famous The History and Antiquities of Boston‎ which was first published on the 23rd October 1856. He died in London, England, in 1862.
Early life and family
George Bass (30 January 1771 &ndash; after 5 February 1803) was baptised in the church at Aswarby, five miles south of Sleaford, in February 1771.

His mother was born at Frampton, and when his father &ndash; a tenant farmer &ndash; died when George was six, they moved to Boston. His uncle, a warden at St Botolph's, knew Joseph Banks of Revesby, the naturalist who sailed with Captain Cook on the Endeavour.

Although his mother wanted him to become a doctor, and he was apprenticed at the age of sixteen to Dr Patrick Francis, surgeon and apothecary of Strait Bargate, George always longed to go to sea. While a pupil at Boston Grammar School he had read Captain Cook's Voyage round the World and other seafaring books, and his uncle's connection with Joseph Banks influenced him.

Career
He left Dr Francis to go to a London hospital, where he qualified as a naval surgeon. In 1794, at the age of twenty-three, he was made surgeon aboard HMS Reliance, on which Matthew Flinders from Donington served as master's mate.

The ship sailed to Port Jackson, a colony at Sydney Cove, where 3,000 convicts lived in dreadful conditions. Bass had brought a tiny boat, Tom Thumb, from England, and with Flinders he explored the uninvestigated area and made sketches of the coastline.

On the 3rd December 1797 he set sail in a twenty-eight-foot whaleboat, and by sailing round Wilson's Point, the southernmost extremity of Australia, he eventually proved that there was indeed a channel between Australia and Van Diemen's Land, now known as Tasmania. This channel became known as the Bass Strait, and his name is also commemorated by Mount Bass, the Bass River, and Bass Town.

Bass was given sick leave and returned to his mother who was then living in Lincoln. Soon, however, he formed a trading company to export goods to New South Wales, and registered the Venus with Lloyds of London in 1800.

On arrival in Port Jackson he found that the market was glutted, and there were no buyers for his goods. He agreed to sail to South America for salted beef and cattle, and left Port Jackson in February 1803, but was never seen again. No trace of his ship was ever found.
When war broke out in 1914 Robert Henry Garnham volunteered for the army. He was sent to Belgium to serve with the 4th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 13th October 1915, during the 137th and 138th (Lincoln and Leicester) Brigades' charge on the Hohenzollern Redoubt.1 He is recorded as having "no known grave", and is commemorated, like Henry George Pinner, on the Loos Memorial in France as well as on the Boston Grammar School Memorial.

This article is mainly about the use of Number One South End, the former headmaster's house in the 1980s, as the common room and classrooms of the Upper Sixth. The ground floor of the house had in fact been used as classrooms before. After the new headmaster's house had been built in Rowley Road, shortly before the arrival in 1954 of William John Ricketts, the ground floor of Number One South End were used by the mathematics and science sets of the sixth form, the old kitchen becoming a laboratory.

The house also came into use as flats for several masters, including at various times Stan Cawthorne, James Loader, Conor McGaughey, Ted Seppings and Ron Abbott.

After the period described below as the "sixth form house", the house was once again split up into flats and is no longer associated with the school.

If Doctor Pattenden Could see us now!
(extracts from an article by David J McGladdery from The Bostonian - 1980)

<blockquote>
<p>At long last the upper-sixth formers of Boston Grammar School have been afforded the comforts and privileges long since promised them. This has been made possible by the renovating and converting of the ground-floor of the former school flats into three tutorial rooms and one common room. To those of you who are not familiar with the building I am alluding to, it is the rather grand ivy-ccovered house facing the river, next to the main gates of the school in South End.</p>

It was built as the official headmaster's residence in 1827, for Dr Thomas Homer. However, he could not have lived in it for very long, as the school roll at that time was reputed to have dwindled to "no boys at all". This also helps to establish why Dr. Homer was also vicar of Frieston. Occupation of this building was taken by Dr. George Edwin Pattenden in 1850. During his reign, number one South End was extended in 1871 to accommodate boarders. The names which can be seen incised in to the brickwork over the door to number 1a South End bear testimony to the original use of this wing.

By this time, the school roll had risen dramatically to one hundred and thirty-six, with four additional masters. The renewed academic progress of the school under Dr Pattenden is reflected in a report made in 1871 by T.H. Ward, a fellow of Brasenose College, Oxford the French "excellent; much better than amongst boys of the great public schools."

It appears that the buildings in South End have been used intermittently for most of this century. And part of the upper floor was once used, temporarily, as a laboratory. It was not until the late fifties that the headmaster - then Mr W.J. Ricketts - vacated South End for a new residence in Rowley Road. The empty house was subsequently divided up into flats for occupation by members of the teaching staff.

As adequate space in the main school was totally lacking for a modern sixth form, the Foudation Governors financially assisted the local authority in enabling the ground floor of number one South End to be adapted as a sixth form social block. The premises themselves are carpeted throughout and comprise three rooms for teaching, a social room complete with gas fire, easy chairs and coffee tables; a kitchen where hot drinks can be prepared; and even a bathroom. And there can't be many sixth formers in the country who enter every morning through a ten-foot tall front door, flanked by two ionic columns, and who can boast of a form-room possessing a marble fireplace!
</blockquote>

The Reality of Number One South End
The sixth formers have now long gone from Number One South End, resident now in a new building designed for the purpose. Was it really as David McGladdery described in 1980? The building is certainly impressive, but the furnishings did not match up to the grandour; not that you would expect or even want them to in a sixth-form den.

The usual tales of strange exploits could be told: of an illicit smokers' corner, of junior members of the school being locked in the cellar, of a moped in the bath, but I will choose to tell another story of the "Sixth-Form House".

The Play Reading
There was to be a series of play readings for sixth formers studying 'A' Level French, held jointly between the (boys) Grammar School and the (girls) High School. The first such reading took place at the High School.

The boys were welcomed at the High School into the spotless common room with library-style seating and were served tea, coffee and the usual assortment of nibbles. It was a pleasant evening, but quite a culture shock was to come for the girls.

The venue for the return match was the common room in Number One South End. Seating consisted of a huge, rather moth-eaten three piece suite and a selection of other, unmatched chairs. Apart from tea and coffee, cider was also available. Compared to the sterile atmosphere of the High School common room, this was like some illicit drinking den. An even greater surprise was the food: Steve "Chippy" Neal went out to his father's fish shop and returned with a cardboard box full of steaming cod and chips.

So was Number One South Street luxurious? Emphatically, not! Was it comfortable and conducive to creative thought? You bet!

A Master's Account
(David J McGladdery mentioned that Numer One South End had formerly been school flats. One of the masters who had lived there was James Loader. Here is his account of the house.)

<blockquote>
<p>South End was, potentially, a beautiful house. The governors charged virtually nothing for rent and the flats were huge. I think we took the place very much for granted. I was very lazy about upkeep and never looked after the garden or the yard; as a result there were cabbages growing between the flagstones. The most energetic thing I ever did out there was sun-bathe.</p>

People used to say the place was haunted. The cellar was certainly very creepy; there were the remains of an old kitchen range in there, and I think a place where there had been a well. Also horrible hooks in the ceiling, where they used to hang meat.
</blockquote>

William John Ricketts was appointed headmaster of Boston Grammar School on 16th March 1954.

Quotes
{{Quote box
|quote = William John Ricketts TD, MA was educated at Wolverhampton Grammar School, where he captained both the cricket and football teams. He obtained an open scholarship in mathematics at Jesus College. Cambridge, where he took a double first and won his college colours for soccer. He taught at Campbell College, Belfast, before serving for two and a half years with the Royal Corps of Signals overseas, mostly in Burma and on the North West Frontier of India. He was demobilised in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant-colonel and returned to Campbell College as senior mathematical master. From 1947 to 1954 he was headmaster at Bangor Grammar School, Co. Down.

He was appointed as headmaster of Boston Grammar School in 1954 and on the 17th January, 1955 there was a service at the 'Stump' to commemorate the quater centenary of the granting of the charter to Boston Grammar School in 1555. It started the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the issue of Philip and Mary's letters patent. It was the forerunner of the Charter Day service held annually ever since.

January 17th was a Monday and a procession marched from the school playground to the Parish Church. Care was taken, as frozen snow covered the road and they were allowed to go past the Five Lamps on the wrong side to make it easier. The boys of the school were already in church and many Old Boys. The service was conducted by the vicar, Canon Eric Kent Ellis and the sermon was preached by Canon Cook. The congregation was headed by the mayor, William Adlard Midgley, the parliamentary secretary at the Ministry of Education, Dennis Vosper MP and the local member, Sir Herbert Butcher. Headmaster Ricketts said prayers and the lessons were read by the head boy, John Henry Malcolm Fox and the Revd J Parker, Boston's superintendent Methodist minister.

The day's celebrations continued with an informal tea party in Big School, in which Old Boys took the opportunity to renew old acquaintances and later there was a dinner at the Assembly Rooms. The chairman of the governors, William Lawson Alexander presided at the dinner, which was necessarily limited. Dennis Vosper in his speech stated: ... "I feel it is a matter of some concern that your school should go on in its present tradition. I can assure you that in my belief there is a very large place for the voluntary school in our education system today ... It is your school not the ministry's. You must maintain the tradition, which tonight culminates in this 400th anniversary."

Other speeches were made by the headmaster, Joseph Langley Burchnall, Sir Herbert Butcher, the mayor, the Earl of Lancaster, Alderman OB Giles, AW Newsom and WH Mason, vice-chairman of the governors.

That summer there was a successful fete in the school grounds and the Old Bostonian Annual Dinner had a special quater centenary flavour with the showing of a film of the January celebrations by Reg Grant of East Heckington. Hubert Turpin published a booklet, Boston Grammar School, 1555-1955, a short history and it was later reprinted. The idea also took shape during the early months of 1955 of adding appropriate stained glass in Big School. A well-supported appeal enabled ten panels, illustrating various aspects of the school's history, to be inserted in the bay window on the west side of the hall.

These were unveiled by Lord Ancaster and dedicated by Canon Ellis at a ceremony on 1st November, 1956. One panel clearly depicted the mayor, town clerk and headmaster at the declaration of the Beast Mart; WA Midgley, CL Hoffrock Gnffiths and WJ Ricketts.

Shortly before Mr. Rickett's arrival, a new headmaster's house had been built in Rowley Road and the headmaster's old house had been converted into two flats for masters. The ground floor of No. 1 South End was used as temporary classrooms for the mathematics and science sets of the sixth form and the old kitchen became a biology laboratory. Work began, however, in December, 1956 on a major new extension, designed by a former pupil, Frederick Ralph Bozeat, a member of the drawing office staff of Holland's County architect. Chairman of the Governors, WL Alexander, laid the foundation stone on May 16th, 1957, saying: "... It was not just a foundation stone but a milestone in the school's history."

The new buildings were officially opened on October 30th, 1958 by Sir Oswald Giles, who had been associated with the school for over half a century: first as minute clerk to his uncle, RW Millington, then as clerk himself and now as County Council chairman. He received a presentation from the head prefect, Frederick J Allday and was thanked by the headmaster. A plaque was unveiled on 21st May, 1959 by Mr. Alexander in the new hall, commemorating its opening and that of the science buildings. The science block consisted of four laboratories, each with a preparation room and accomodated four dasses of thirty. The old science block was adapted to provide three classrooms, two of which were later converted into biology laboratories.

The foundation's financial inability to fund these extensions resulted in the school becoming 'voluntary controlled', instead of 'voluntary aided'. Previously there had been ten foundation and five representative governors; now it meant that there would be only five foundation governors and ten of the seats held by the LEA.

In 1960 the prefects started to wear distinctive lapel badges and ties. Participation started in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme. The splendid new sports pavilion was opened on May 29th by Mr. Alexander and in September the new staff common room came into use. The following year the Big School was transformed into its present function as the school library.

A modest swimming pool was built in 1964 on land purchased from Mr. ST Belton and it was appropriately officially opened by the mayor, Geoffrey Moulder. Instructions for pupils in vehicle maintenance and driving, under the auspices of the local road safety committee and supervised by the police, began in 1965 and in 1967 fourth formers and upwards enjoyed a new sporting activity - rowing.

Mobile classrooms had to be obtained in 1968 to provide more teaching space and by 1975, when the number of pupils had risen to 574, 200 boys were taught in the mobiles.

On Sunday, 15th December, 1968 Professor Burchnall performed the ceremony to hand over four panels of stained glass, which were installed to mark the fourth centenary of the erection of the Elizabethan hall. The four panels depicted the men, after whom the school houses had been named: Muston, Gannock, Parry and Laughton. The dedication was by the chairman of the governors, Canon Peter Ellice Paine, vicar of Freiston with Butterwick.

After Mr Rickett's wife died in 1957, he remarried into the well known local Murray family. He served on Holland Education Committee and took his turn as Chairman of the local Rotary Club. He resigned in 1969 to emigrate to Australia, where his wife had relatives. At a social evening in the new school hall on 16th December, 1969 Canon Paine presented the departing headmaster with a canteen of cutlery and a plaque bearing the borough coat of arms was presented by the mayor, George Whitehead, later Judge Whitehead.
Philip Frederick Johnston was appointed headmaster of Boston Grammar School on 1st January 1970.

Quotes
{{Quote box
|quote = Philip Frederick Johnston MA, BLitt was educated at Manchester Grammar School from 1946 to 1954. He then spent two years' National Service in the RAF as a Pilot Officer, before being admitted to Christ's College, Cambridge, where he read history under Sir Jack Plumb and theology under Robert Runcie. After graduation, he transferred to St. Peter's College, Oxford, where he obtained a Bachelor of Letters degree for his research in church history. In 1960 he was selected to play lacrosse for Oxford, gaining his half-blue against his former university. He was an assistant master at Magdalene College School. Oxford from 1961 to 1962, he taught at Wolverhampton Grammar School from 1962 to 1965 and was head of the history department at Barnard Castle School, Co. Durham from 1965, until he came to Boston Grammar School as headmaster in 1970.

Exchange visits, each lasting a school year, between a BGS master and an American teacher began in September, 1971, when TJ Lamb changed posts with TS Fisher of Pennsylvania High School. In 1976 there were two visiting teachers on the staff; B Barbaroux from France and Ted Hipwell from Canada and, as Mr Johnston said: "it gave an added dimension and international flavour to the school."

He encouraged the school's tri-service contingent of the Combined Cadet Force and held the rank of squadron leader in the movement. In 1974 he was awarded the Cadet Forces Medal and he was an honorary member of the officers' mess at RAF Coningsby.

He was an active worker for Holy Trinity Church, a lay reader and a member of the General Synod of the Church of England. He also served on the national council of the Historical Association and led BGS boys through Middle East bazaars and sacred sites and on county council-sponsored Mediterranean cruises as well as on visits to Service units in Germany.

The Speech Day in 1974 was held in two sessions, one in the afternoon for the second and third year forms, the other in the evening for the remainder of the school. This solved the seating difficulty but required a double attendance for the guest speaker, Canon Paine, and staff. Two years after this, however, a written suggestion by twenty-eight members of the staff that the venue should be changed to the Centenary Methodist Church was agreed. Philip Johnston was given permission to resign his appointment early in order to take charge of Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School at Blackburn in 1977 on the death of the previous headmaster.
{{Quote box
|quote = ===The Headmaster writes...===

1976 was the year of the Drought, the Minibus and the revival of school drama in a delightful and colourful renaissance. It was also the year in which world-travel and international exchange seized the staff-room again, with Mr Borrett hardly home from Canada when Mr Bell and Mr Constable were laying plans to follow suit!

Mr CR McGaughey came to us from Trinity College, Cambridge where he read English, to replace Mr John Phelan who left to teach at his wife's old school, the Sir John Leman Comprehensive School at Beccles in Suffolk. We missed Mr Phelan's quiet contribution to the English department, and - in particular - his work in the Library and his sterling, behind-the-scenes, administration in the rowing world: our rowing has now lost four coaches, and it must be hoped that we can shortly find someone to help in this most useful addition to our extra curricular activities. We also said goodbye to two hard-working part-time members of staff, Mrs Irene Crosby, and the Reverend Mark Spurrell (who had served town and gown for over a decade) and Mr Brian Slater, who - after a brief stay here - returned to Oxford to write a doctoral thesis upon the teaching of chemistry.

New Vicar
Charter Day was held 2 October when the new Vicar of the Parish Church, Canon Trevor Collins, undertook his first public engagement in the town, as our special preacher. Formerly the Diocesan Director of Education, he brings a rare knowledge of contemporary life and education to our midst, and he will be a most useful member of our Governing Body. The excitements of the very successful Yugoslavian Summer trip were hardly recaptured when the Head Master, helped by his wife, led a party of boys on another 'Uganda' school-ship cruise, to Greece, Egypt, the Holy Land, and eventually to Italy. Although the midnight coach-trip to Gatwick airport was something of a traveller's nightmare, the rest of the adventure was more peaceful and very memorable, and many boys returned home with more than bags of 'blessed Bethlehem earth', rich recollections of civilisations long since gone, and of The Man who turned the world upside down. (Canon Collins had been the Anglican chaplain on the 1971 cruise, which had been this school's first such journey).

Strong Smell
A strong smell of painting persisted throughout the Autumn term, inter mingled with the sounds of building the new gymnasium, and it was not long before Speech Day and Prize-Giving was again upon us with Mr B Miller, Master of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, presenting the prizes. His appearance was accompanied by quite remarkable Oxbridge results with WJ Kuhn winning an Open Scholarship in English to St. Peter's College, Oxford - a most distinguished performance - together with places awarded to no fewer than six other boys, Allen to Christ's, Cambridge (History), Brunning - Fitzwilliam (Natural Sciences), Howard - St. Edmund Hall, Oxford (Jurisprudence), King - St. Peter's College, Oxford (Natural Sciences) and Willows - New College, Oxford - to read mathematics. These happy results demonstrate just how well boys can do, when they are prepared to work with an able staff to achieve the highest possible goals.

The Spring term was marked by the formal launching of the BGS Parents' Association's first formal meeting when an amazingly large crowd of parents braved the rigours of ice-box hall to discuss the plans for re-organisation of the school. Despite skilful chairing by Canon Collins, it was quite clear that few, if any, parents were prepared to think about comprehensivization as a stated fact of life, prepared only to discuss whether it should have ever been initiated in the first place. In this they were obviously thinking along the same lines as the County Council, who subsequently postponed public meetings in Boston, to debate the same matter.

The Head Master returned from Cambridge in a gloomy frame of mind at the end of March having listened to Mr Mulley, then Minister of Education, speaking to the Headmasters' Association, his chief theme being that reorganisation always took the form of listening to local views, and following local initiatives: I found this hard to swallow, as did my fellow Heads!

May saw a very successful and enjoyable production of "The Court of The Royal Astrologer" by Mr. Constable, revealing some young dramatic talent not seen before, and this was the first occasion in which we saw the use of the new hall and stage curtains, green and old gold, for which the Parents' Association and the Foundation Governors had raised over £1,000, nearly half the total cost. The informal Inspection of the CCF by Brigadier Burgess, Director of Army Recruiting, an enjoyable school concert and exam-briefing soon took us into the 'O' and 'A'-level papers and the Mediterranean conditions which were to persist throughout the summer, making even the school pool a place of warmth but also a relief at the end of yet another torrid day.

And so the year ended, with rumours of re-organisation delayed, a full-time girl joining the school in September (our first such) and the amazing events of the next term, when a horse bit a member of the staff... but more of this anon...
{{Quote box
|quote = ===An Election===

The Director often forgot that we were a Voluntary School, especially when we are discussing the implications of circular 10/76 (which, if implemented, would have destroyed our selective entry) but the then angry young man in me did not forget that it was the governors, not the LEA, who were responsible for letting the premises. So even I was surprised to find that the County Council automatically assumed that it would be perfectly in order for the General Election count to be held in my school hall, without much reference to the school. Life moved slowly under Holland County Council (from 1974, Lincolnshire) and it was something of a shock to see lights blazing away at midnight in my school, with the Clerk to the County Council puffing away on his curly pipe, in his role as the Returning Officer.

I thought that I would join in the fun, so received my second shock of the evening when my way was barred by a burly member of the Lincolnshire constabulary, who said that I was unable to enter the hall because of my lack of an affidavit, signed by a local magistrate. This was news to me, so I effected a strategic withdrawal, to ponder the matter!

However, living on the premises was not without its advantages, so I strode home, across the playing fields, to collect that large bunch of keys always associated with a motley array of ancient and modern buildings; the superb library of Boston Grammar School dates back to 1567, being the old schoolroom.

With jangling keys, I then effected an entrance through the back of the school, entered my study and put on my gown — not my usual form of garb at 01:30hrs! Manfully striding down the corridor towards the aforesaid school hall, I dutifully presented myself to the same policeman, who quickly saluted me, and proceeded to hold open the door for me…!

And so I saw my first proclamation by a Returning Officer, of the election of (Sir) Richard Body, Member of Parliament for Holland with Boston duly elected…
