'''George Edwin Pattenden''' (1823 - 9th November 1897) was the longest serving headmaster of [[Boston Grammar School]], from 12th August 1850 to 1887. He is considered one of the most pivotal figures in the school's history.

He wrote the words of the school song, [[Floreat Bostona (music)|Floreat Bostona]], writing the first five verses in 1866 and adding a special sixth verse in 1887.

His son [[Frederick William Waldebrand Pattenden|Frederick Pattenden]] was the first winner of the [[Parry Gold Medal]] in 1875.

In its issue of 13 June, 1868 [[Wikipedia:The Illustrated London News|The Illustrated London News]] announced that "The Head Mastership of Christ's Hospital now being vacant, a highly suitable candidate has presented himself in the person of the Rev. [[George Edwin Pattenden]]...". It goes on to say that "The Boston Grammar School, under his management, has been raised, fron a state approaching total extinction, to a position equal to any of its class, and his pupils have gained a very large number of prizes at both the Universities, besides some of the best places in the Civil Service and Indian Service Examinations." Pattenden continued at Boston Grammar School until 1887.

Pattenden was educated at Christ's Hospital, London, and Peterhouse College, Cambridge.

He was ordained in Lincoln in 1846 and appointed curate of [[Wikipedia:Aunsby and Dembleby|Scott Willoughby]] near Sleaford in 1848. He married Matilda Elizabeth Ann Walbran at the end of 1849 and in March 1850 was appointed headmaster of [[Wikipedia:Matthew Humberstone School|Matthew Humberston's Free School]], the Humberstone Foundation School in the village of [[Wikipedia:Humberston|Humberston]], near Grimsby.

Many of our leading citizens to-day, and many holding high places the world over, will recall with pleasureable pride their connection with the kindly Doctor. He was a man to be remembered and admired, one whose name should never vanish from the scroll of local history. His death, which occurred at Freckenham Rectory, Suffolk, on Sunday, Nov. 9, 1897, was universally regretted, for he had raised the standard of the School considerably, and endeared himself not only to so great a number of "old boys" but to the inhabitants of Boston generally.

Canon Pattenden was born in 1823, and was educated at Christ's Hospital, London, and Peterhouse College, Cambridge. Amongst his school companions were Dr. Harper, the late Master of Jesus College, Cambridge, and Dr. Haigh-Brown, the present Master of Charterhouse. In 1850, Canon Pattenden was elected to the Head Mastership of Boston Grammar School, under its new scheme, and office he held with marked success for thirty-seven years. It was due to his untiring energy that the school rose to its present position of prosperity. Not a few of our fellow townsmen owe to his training their success at the University, and other honourable careers. All his old boys can recollect with affection his singular ability as a teacher, his ripe scholarship, his many social gifts, and his warm-hearted kindness as a friend.

Canon Pattenden held the Incumbancy of the Chapel-of-Ease, as well as the Head Mastership of our Grammar School. When he resigned the latter position at the Grammar School in 1887, he accepted the living of Chertsey, Surrey, where he soon won the honour and affection of his parishoners. It was during his stay there that a heavy blow fell on Dr. Pattenden, and a father's long-cherished hopes were extinguished with the death of his son, Mr. [[Frederick William Waldebrand Pattenden|F. Pattenden]] - a man in the prime of life, and of great promise.

In 1892, Dr. Pattenden was offered and accepted the College living of Freckenham, a smaller parish than Chertsey, with less arduous duties, and the fuller measure of retirement to a busy life of hard work claimed and deserved. Canon Pattenden's interest in Boston was always keen - "Floreat Bostona" was his wish for the prosperity of the town and school, where he spent so many years of loyal and faithful service.

The present head master of the school is Mr. [[William White|W. White]], M.A., who succeeded Dr. Pattenden, having been second master for a number of years. Mr. White was formerly at Marlborough. He has shown a remarkable talent for coaching pupils for the higher examinations, and past scholars will apreciate the fact that their old school has acquired a very high reputation at the Universities, the number of scholarships won in open competition during the last ten or twelve years being a British record for a school of the size. In the Oxford Local examinations, also, the institution has for a long period won continuous honours, and in the last five years, has three times headed the whole list of candidates.

Many of Dr. Pattenden's old pupils have distinguished themselves in Her Majesty's Indian Civil Service; we may mention the names of Roe, Snaith, Fisher, Pilcher, and Johnston, the last of whom passed direct from the school.

No biography of Dr. Pattenden would be complete without some mention of a man who was ever his faithful friend and assistant. We refer to the venerable and well-beloved Mr. [[John Francis Bazlinton|Bazlinton]], who taught three generations of scholars, serving as a master froim 1843 to within three days of his death in 1898. There is scarcely a successful tradesman of this town who does not owe much of his commercial aptitude to this scholastic patriarch. No enterprising Mayor has done more good work for his Borough than Dr. Pattenden and Mr. Bazlinton, and wherever "old boys" are gathered, their names will be linked together in honoured remembrance.

<p>My great-grandfather, [[Frederick George Johnson]] (1850-1909), was Second Master at BGS in 1874, when he married Canon Pattenden's daughter, Rosalie Ellen. His brother-in-law, [[Richard Hamer]], was Fourth Master when he married Rosalie's elder sister, Clara Louisa. I know that a number of Canon Pattenden's nephews were educated at BGS.</p>

Canon Pattenden endured a very public divorce in the late 1860's, reported in great detail in The Times, which wrote that Mrs Pattenden was supposed to have "disgraced herself" with the French Master (possibly [[Louis Hotsch]]) and one or more of the Senior boys!

There is also the story, reported to me by a grandson of Canon Pattenden, who was quite certain of his facts, that Canon Pattenden's third daughter, Ada Mary, became pregnant in 1877 by the Chief Constable of Northamptonshire, Thomas Orde Hastings Lees, a charming Irishman of noble descent. She was apparently bundled off to Bavaria, where Mr Lees' brother lived, to have the baby, which was then brought up as the legitimate offspring of Mr Lees. The Pattenden family was exceedingly grateful to Mrs Lees for her compliance in this cover-up, (she was made godmother to my grandfather, who was born in 1880). The [[Wikipedia:Thomas Orde-Lees|illegitimate son]] went on, incidentally, to join Shackleton's expedition to the South Pole, where he was so unpopular with his fellows that they agreed that, if they ran out of food and had no choice but to resort to cannibalism, they would eat him, because he was so grumpy and pessimistic! His daughter married the philosophers, A.J. Ayer and S.N. Hampshire.

Mark Lemon, founder of Punch Magazine was born in 1809. After the death of his father in 1817 and the remarriage of his mother, he went to live with his uncle, Thomas Collis, hop and timber merchant of Spilsby and Boston who moved from Spilsby to Boston at some point between 1820 and 1827. He remained with him, learning the hop and timber trade, for some years.

Thomas' son, Thomas Collis (1827-1875), was another of my great-great-grandfathers. He married Harriett Ellen Pattenden (1833-1886), sister to Canon George Edwin Pattenden, in 1856. I manage to be descended from both George Edwin Pattenden and his sister by dint of the fact that my grandparents were second cousins!

[[George Edwin Pattenden]], LL.D., Canon of Lincoln, and Vicar of Chertsey, Surrey (after leaving [[Boston Grammar School]] where he was Headmaster from 1850 to 1887), was born on the 22nd August, 1857, He was educated at [[Boston Grammar School]], entering the school when not quite six years of age, on the 10th August, 1863 and remaining there until August 1876. He was the first winner of the [[Parry Gold Medal]] in 1875. In the following October he proceeded to New College, Oxford, having gained an Open Classical Scholarship at that college in the summer of 1876. He obtained College prizes in 1877 and 1880, and was Proxime accessit for the Hertford University Scholarship in 1877, and third for the same scholarship in 1878. In the Michaelmas Term 1877 he was placed in the First Class in Classical Moderations; and in Trinity Term 1880 he was placed in the Second Class in Literis Humanioribus. He thereupon took his degree of B.A. On the 19th June, 1884 he took the degree of M.A.

From his youth he was a lover of all athletic games and exercises; both at School and College he made his mark therein. He was for two years Captain of New College Boat Club, and was selected to row in the University ‘Trial Eights’.

While at the University he entered as a student at the Inner Temple and was called to the Bar on the 24th June, (Trinity Term) 1884. Shortly after leaving the University he took an extended tour round the World as tutor to Mr. Leonard Marshall, visiting first several European countries and afterwards visiting Egypt, Palestine, India, Ceylon, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia, New Zealand the Sandwich Islands, the USA and Canada — the whole tour lasting about two years. On his return he was called to the bar and devoted himself to work as a barrister and to literature. He was employed on the staff of the Literary World as a reviewer, and contributed verse compositions to various periodicals.

He died on the morning of Monday the 9th of December, 1889 from typhoid fever in his thirty-third year and was buried at Chertsey. His residence at the time of death was recorded as Eaton Square, London.

His early death was a tragedy for he was on the threshold of a distinguished career at the Bar. He was immensely popular wherever he went and could truthfully be described as ‘the life and soul of the party’.

On 14 February 2016, the [[Old Bostonian Association]] purchased a copy of "Verses by FWW Pattenden" for the [[OBA mini-museum]].

The main '''quadrangle''' buildings were opened on 21 October 1926, on the east side of [[Big School]]. They were the most extensive addition to the school up to that point, and to this day they comprise a significant proportion of the school buildings. The architectural designs were produced by [[Wikipedia:Scorer and Gamble|Scorer and Gamble]]. The land itself, adjoining Big School, was purchased from George Fydell Rowley (1851-1933).

Many future additions to the school were connected to this original quadrangle. The [[Assembly Hall]] was connected in 1958, the [[Staff Room]] in 1960, the [[Junior Common Room]] in 1966 and the [[Dining Halls#Second Dining Hall|second Dining Hall]] in 1984.

The quadrangle itself was later bisected by the [[Link Block]] in 1988, creating an east quad and a smaller west quad.

Around 1994 the originally open-air cloisters in the west quad were enclosed with glass.

In 2000 semi-circular benches were placed in the middle of the east quad, and a number of trees were planted.

Organist and Choirmaster, who for many years was at the heart of the musical community in Boston

David Wright came to Boston in 1957 to take up the posts of Organist & Choirmaster at [[Wikipedia:St Botolph's Church, Boston|St. Botolph’s]] (''the Stump'') and music master at [[Boston Grammar School]], a joint appointment which arose following the departure of his predecessor, [[Philip Marshall]], to [[Wikipedia:Ripon Cathedral|Ripon Cathedral]].

As Organist & Choirmaster at the Stump, he led the musical life of the community for over 40 years, until his retirement in 1999. In the earlier part of his time at the Stump he led the choir in several broadcasts of Choral Evensong on [[Wikipedia:BBC Radio 3|BBC Radio 3]] and [[Wikipedia:BBC World Service|BBC Overseas Service]]. The 450th anniversary of the death of the great Tudor composer, John Taverner, in 1995 brought a number of events to the Stump, including a memorial service on the occasion of the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to mark Taverner's [[Wikipedia:File:Grave of John Taverner - geograph.org.uk - 596642.jpg|resting place]] under the tower, at which the Stump choir sang several of Taverner's [[Wikipedia:John Taverner#Votive antiphons|antiphons]], under David's direction.

David's close working relationship with the Taverner scholar and composer Colin Hand, also a Boston resident, led to the composition of several works by Dr Hand for David, the Stump choir and the Boston Choral Society. ===Childhood, Birmingham and Oxford===

David was born in 1934 in [[Wikipedia:Leamington Spa|Leamington Spa]], shortly after which the family moved to [[Wikipedia:Birmingham|Birmingham]]. With the outbreak of war, the family chose to relocate to [[Wikipedia:Barmouth|Barmouth]] to avoid the risk of bombing in Birmingham, and it was in Barmouth that David took his first piano lessons and sang in the choir. ===Boston – organist, pianist and teacher===

Throughout his time in Boston, David was a frequent recitalist, as organist and also as a pianist, both in solo piano recitals and as an accompanist for many local singers and instrumentalists. He had learned to play the piano in Birmingham with the noted teacher Leonard Rayner<ref>[http://www.tilling.org.uk/lrps/leonardrayner.html Leonard Rayner] - Leonard Rayner Piano School</ref> – who had himself been taught by Benno Schoenberger<ref>[https://musiklexikon.ac.at/ml/musik_S/Schoenberger_Benno.xml Schönberger, Benno] - Oesterreichisches Musiklexicon Online</ref>, a favoured pupil of [[Wikipedia:Franz Liszt|Franz Liszt]]. (The tutoring lineage then goes back directly to [[Wikipedia:Carl Czerny|Czerny]] and [[Wikipedia:Ludwig van Beethoven|Beethoven]])

He oversaw the restoration of the Stump's [[Wikipedia:Harrison & Harrison|Harrison & Harrison]] organ in 1987<ref>[https://parish-of-boston.org.uk/music/the-organ/ St Botolph's Harrison & Harrison Organ] - The Parish of Boston</ref>, and made two commercially available recordings on the instrument, issued in 1987 and 1992. When the opportunity arose for him to take the post of Director of Music at [[Wikipedia:Bath Abbey|Bath Abbey]], it was his preference for the organ at Boston over that of Bath Abbey which contributed to his decision to remain in Boston.

Following his retirement as Choirmaster at the Stump in 1999 he continued as Organist, and was appointed Organist Emeritus in 2007. Whilst always eschewing the limelight, performance on the Stump organ framed his life in Boston, including as soloist in a Handel organ concerto with Sir [[Wikipedia:Adrian Boult|Adrian Boult]] and the [[Wikipedia:London Philharmonic Orchestra|London Philharmonic Orchestra]] in 1959, through to performances of the [[Wikipedia:Francis Poulenc|Poulenc]] Organ Concerto and [[Wikipedia:Camille Saint-Saëns|Saint-Saëns]] 'Organ Symphony' in later years. On a visit to Boston in the 1970s, the then-serving Prime Minister [[Wikipedia:Edward Heath|Edward Heath]] specifically requested an opportunity to hear and play the organ at the Stump, resulting in David and Edward Heath turning pages for each other in the loft as they took turns to play the instrument.

In 2019, David's services to church music in Boston were recognised by an honorary award from the [[Wikipedia:Royal School of Church Music|RSCM]], when David was made an Associate of the Royal School of Church Music at a ceremony in [[Wikipedia:Salisbury Cathedral|Salisbury Cathedral]].

As a teacher, David was responsible for inspiring generations of pupils in Boston, including many who went on to pursue careers in music, both through his private instrumental lessons on the piano and organ, and his role as Head of Music at [[Boston Grammar School]] from 1957 to 1999. School concerts, the school orchestra and supporting dramatic productions were all part of the role, and as the curriculum moved increasingly to the use of electronics he relished the opportunity to involve himself supporting his pupils through the use of recording equipment, a life-long interest. In later years, pupils also enjoyed the inspiration from his wide-ranging assembly talks, crossing onto many diverse topics beyond music.

He was an examiner for the [[Wikipedia:ABRSM|Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music]] (having completed his training under [[Wikipedia:Herbert Howells|Herbert Howells]]), an adjudicator at music competitions and festivals, and a lecturer and tutor in the extra-mural department of [[Wikipedia:University of Nottingham|Nottingham University]] (1958 – 1969).

Although a traditionalist, he loved to 'let his hair down' musically, entertaining boys through school performances of "Rooster Rag" or "Daniel Jazz", his improvisations, and his own comic arrangements for choir concerts. Countless youngsters found themselves opened to a lifelong love of music through his enthusiasm to cross musical boundaries, with his enjoyment of the lighter side exemplified by his love of the music of [[Wikipedia:Jacques Loussier|Jacques Loussier]] and [[Wikipedia:The King's Singers|The King's Singers]].

===Other interests===

Aside from music David had a very wide range of interests. He enjoyed all things mechanical, including old cars and steam engines, and had an interest in astronomy and physics (having studied the then-nascent topic of nuclear physics when in the sixth form). He was passionately interested in sound recording and hi-fi technology, often editing his own recordings. He had a love of poetry, Latin, much classic literature, and the impressionist painters. As a young man he was a keen photographer, carrying out his own dark-room processing and printing, and building his own photographic enlarger.

In the 1980s and 1990s he took up table tennis, initially with son [[Toby Wright|Toby]], and competed in the Boston & District Table Tennis League<ref>[https://boston.ttleagues.com/ Boston Table Tennis League]</ref> for several seasons.

He maintained his acute and enquiring intellect to the end of his life, with a particular passion for keeping his mind active completing [[Wikipedia:Killer sudoku|killer sudoku]] puzzles.

David met his future wife, Joan (née Gelsthorp) when she became an organ pupil of his on arriving in Boston in 1957. They married in 1961. Joan was herself a very fine musician. An Associate of the Royal College of Music, she worked with David as rehearsal accompanist for Boston Choral Society and Boston Operatic Society, in addition to her own roles as Assistant Organist at [[Wikipedia:Skirbeck|St.Nicholas's Church, Skirbeck]] and music teacher at [[Wikipedia:Excell International School|Conway School]].

David moved to [[Wikipedia:Winchester|Winchester]] in early 2020 to be closer to his son and daughter-in-law, Toby and Sarah, and his grandchildren, Martha and Freya. He passed away in Winchester on 14 January 2021.

I was lucky enough to be the Assistant Organist at [[Wikipedia:New College, Oxford|NC]] in a truly vintage year (1956-57), having the unique experience of working under no fewer than three eminent musicians in that short period: [[Wikipedia:Herbert Kennedy Andrews|H.K. Andrews]], [[Wikipedia:Henry Ley|Henry Ley]] and [[Wikipedia:Meredith Davies|Meredith Davies]]. All three treated me as a friend rather than as a junior, and I regard it as a great privilege to have had the opportunity to be so close to them and share their confidences, which were not always anything to do with music.

I had been the Organ Scholar at [[Wikipedia:Exeter College, Oxford|Exeter College]], which was one of the very few Oxford Colleges that recruited local boys to sing with the college undergraduates who formed the [[Wikipedia:SATB|ATB]] sections of the chapel choir. (Some little time later Organ Scholars at the college had the luxury of using boys from [[Wikipedia:Christ Church Cathedral School|Christ Church School]], and of course after the college ceased to be a single-sex one female undergraduates joined the choir instead of boys, and this is the situation now.)

In my post-graduate (B. Mus.) year, when my services were no longer required at Exeter College, H. K. Andrews invited me to be his assistant. I was flattered and thrilled that this great man had chosen me, but perhaps he was influenced by the fact that when I took the [[Wikipedia:Royal College of Organists|F.R.C.O.]] examination I was awarded the [[Wikipedia:Richard Limpus|Limpus Prize]]. One day HKA told me that the Headmaster of New College School would like to meet me, so I duly went along to the school. There was a chap in scruffy old overalls mowing the grass, and I politely asked him if he could tell me where I might find the Headmaster, to which he responded: "I AM the Headmaster".

I got on really well with HKA, and found him to be very kind, supportive and encouraging, in spite of his reputation for being awkward and at loggerheads with most people. I remember that when an admiring student asked him how he managed to get his choristers to produce such beautiful tone, he growled: "They wouldn't dare not to!". HKA was also very generous. He was even intending to take me on a trip to [[Wikipedia:Bayreuth|Bayreuth]], to experience [[Wikipedia:Richard Wagner|Wagner]] on his home ground, although in the end this had to fall through. I was able to enjoy having the occasional dinner with him at High Table in New College at his expense, though, at which the alcohol flowed freely, including my introduction to the delights of [[Wikipedia:Cognac|Cognac]].

My only disappointment during this wonderful time was that a BBC programme of music by [[Wikipedia:Thomas Morley|Morley]] that we were due to record had to be cancelled because the boys succumbed to an outbreak of [[Wikipedia:chickenpox|chickenpox]]! (Or was it [[Wikipedia:measles|measles]]? No doubt there are ex choristers who remember.) During the [[Wikipedia:Michaelmas term|Michaelmas term]] HKA resigned, and Meredith Davies was appointed to succeed him. As he was the Organist at [[Wikipedia:Hereford Cathedral|Hereford Cathedral]] he had to give the Dean and Chapter there the appropriate notice and therefore was not able to take up the NC post for a few months, so Henry Ley was brought out of retirement in [[Wikipedia:Ottery St Mary|Ottery St. Mary]] to bridge the gap. I greatly respected him because of what he had achieved during his working life, and he was delightful to work with, but was of the opinion that the NC Choir was so good that rehearsal was superfluous! I disagreed with him over one issue – at one Evensong we had performed one of [[Wikipedia:Herbert Howells|Herbert Howells]]'s settings (probably the [[Wikipedia:Collegium Regale (Howells)|Coll. Reg.]]), and when he came up to the organ loft afterwards I was enthusing about the beauty, not only of the choral writing, but also that of the organ part. He made it clear that he did not think much of Howells’s organ music, saying that only [[Wikipedia:Johann Sebastian Bach|Bach]] really knew how to write for the organ!

In those days, as well as being a keyboard player, I was a [[Wikipedia:countertenor|countertenor]] singer, and when Meredith Davies eventually took up office he made more use of me as an [[Wikipedia:alto|alto]] in the choir, singing opposite Michael Groser<ref>[http://www.groserfamilies.com/misc/page1499.html Michael Groser, sculptor] - groserfamilies.com</ref>. (Incidentally, I was surprised that in all that was written about Michael after his death, no mention was made of what is my abiding memory of him, that he used to ride about on a precarious-looking motorised bicycle! It seemed somehow so to characterize his delightful but somewhat off-beat personality.) I remember in one BBC recording in which I was singing Meredith stopped the choir after the very first chord because my note was apparently not quite in tune!

Meredith had a wry and rather naughty sense of humour, and I shan't forget an occasion when forty singers, including both him and me, were arranged in a semicircle on the [[Wikipedia:Holywell Music Room|Holywell Music Room]] platform to perform [[Wikipedia:Thomas Tallis|Tallis]]'s [[Wikipedia:Spem in Alium|Spem in Alium]]. It fell to my lot to start the whole thing off, and Meredith, who was standing nearly opposite me, was doing his best to make me laugh just as we were beginning by pulling funny faces at me.

It was in his time that I received the biggest fee, relative to the amount of work involved, that I have ever been paid. It was a BBC recording of music that was almost entirely unaccompanied. There was just one anthem (by Henry Ley, I think) that had an organ introduction consisting of just six single notes. As the organist's fee was eighteen guineas – a princely sum to a student in 1957 – I was in effect paid at the rate of three guineas per note! Incidentally, I never heard the broadcasts that we did, and I should be very interested to hear from anyone who has any recordings (presumably on reel-to-reel tape) from this era. I think they were recorded for the [[Wikipedia:BBC World Service|BBC Overseas Service]].

It seems a sad fact that no-one mentioned in these recollections of mine is still alive, but we are after all going back fifty-five years!

Boston Grammar School Foundation

The Foundation is the original governing body of the school dating from 1555. It ceased to govern the school following the 1944 Education Act, but as it owned assets it continued in existence to use the assets for the benefit of the school as a registered charity in England and Wales.

It is an endowed charity, meaning that it has funds which it invests for the purpose of generating an income to be spent on the charitable objects.

There are 16 volunteer members of the Foundation, including many Old Boys, who meet in the School Library to supervise the finances and co-operate with the Head in the best possible use of the money.

Typical uses include supporting the minibus, music tuition, prizes, equipment, hardship fund and special projects. There are also scholarships for former students attending university, created by generous gifts from friends of the school.

Jonathan graduated in Medicine from the University of Nottingham in 1987. After 5 years of hospital-based clinical medicine, he pursued an academic training in public health and epidemiology and developed an interest in influenza and respiratory viruses, mentored for many years by Prof Karl Nicholson. He became a Senior Lecturer at the University of Nottingham (and Consultant Regional Epidemiologist, Public Health Laboratory Service) in 1997, before joining the pharmaceutical industry as an Associate Director at SmithKline Beecham in 2000.

In April 2001 he moved to Roche as Head of Medical Affairs, before joining Aventis Pasteur MSD in February 2002 as UK Medical Director.

He returned to the public sector in 2004 at the Health Protection Agency Centre for Infections, where he was Head of the Pandemic Influenza Office until October 2007. Jonathan has now returned to Nottingham as Professor of Health Protection, maintaining his long-standing special interest in influenza: epidemiology; transmission; vaccinology; antiviral drugs; and pandemic preparedness. Over that time he has published over 100 scientific papers and written several chapters in textbooks. He chaired the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) Expert Advisory Group on H5N1 human vaccines, sits on the UK national Scientific Pandemic Influenza Committee (SPI), the UK Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) [during the 2009-10 pandemic]. He is Co-Editor of the highly rated textbook: “Introduction to Pandemic Influenza” which came out in November 2009 and entered into Second Edition in December 2012; and a Senior Editor of Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses.

His unit is an officially designated WHO Collaborating Centre for pandemic influenza and research and a UK Faculty of Public Health ‘National Treasure’ research training location.

Since 2014 he has been Chair of the UK Government’s New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threat Advisory Group (NERVTAG).

Jonathan was awarded an MBE (military section) in the 1998 New Year's Honours as Acting Maj Jonathan Stafford Nguyen-Van-Tam, Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force. At school Jim was known as Professor because of his ability to speak in a knowledgeable manner on many topics.

After gaining a degree in Computer Science from the University of Manchester in 1982, Jim returned to Boston in the early 1980s and opened Felix Computers, one of Boston's first computer shops. He went on to run a number of computer-related businesses in Boston before making his fortune with the Zyra web site. The mechanism for monetising Zyra used [[Wikipedia:Affiliate marketing|affiliate marketing]].

Early in 2012, Jim emigrated to Panama as a tax exile. A self-confessed hoarder, Jim took 38 tonnes of baggage with him to Panama.

''Written by Suzanne Ryan''

Frank Ryan (8/8/1920 - 21/5/2023) went to Boston Grammar in the 1930s, most probably 1931 to 1939. His father died as a result of service in WW1, so Frank was supported by the British Legion.

He was a terrific sportsman, and was awarded colours for football and cricket. Several of the school track records he set in athletics stood for years afterwards. In 1938 and 1939 he played for the Gentlemen of Lincolnshire. After college he returned to Boston and played cricket for the Old Bostonians , 1941 - 45.

After school, Frank went to St John’s College, York on a state scholarship for teacher training. He went on to have a long and successful career in education - finishing his last 18 years as a headmaster in Barkston and Earlesfield Primary Schools in Grantham.

Frank married another bright spark of 1940s Boston youth - Audrey Sands - in 1946. The celebrated 65 years of married life together.

Frank remained grateful to his school and fond of his chums and his time there. He was a long-time Old Bostonian.

F. T. Ryan, the Captain of Cricket, is to be congratulated on making 52 not out against Moulton, and so winning the first bat awarded by the Headmaster since 1935.

In the first match of the season against Spalding F. T. Ryan took the greatest number of wickets, but he did not always maintain his accuracy or his effectiveness in long spells.

At Sleaford he led the team brilliantly, but at other times he did not always handle the bowling and his field to the best advantage.

[A] misfortune befell the [school football] team when Ryan was injured against Sleaford, and did not return to the team until the last match of the season.

The School Mile was run on Wednesday, March 16th. There were only seven runners, many boys still being absent through influenza. The weather was fine but a strong breeze was blowing. Ryan soon overtook [[Jack Bates OBE|Bates]] who had received ten yards, and he led by several yards from [[Herbert Dodson|Dodson]] and Bates at the end pf the first lap. Ryan increased his lead on the next lap and Crow came into second place, followed by Woods and Dodson. The field was now well strung out, and this order was maintained until the end. Ryan won easily from Crow in the record time of five minutes thirteen and three-fifth seconds. The previous record set up by [[Norroy Vass|C. C. N. Vass]] in 1921, was five minutes twenty-one seconds.

F.T. Ryan accomplished the most outstanding feat of the day [Athletic Sports - Thursday 12th May] by breaking the record for the Half-mile by 10.2 seconds. [in 2 minutes 15.2 seconds]

Reg Boyce, widower of Lucy, died in [[Wikipedia:Pilgrim Hospital|Pilgrim Hospital]] after a long illness. He was 80. Born in [[Wikipedia:Wisbech|Wisbech]], Cambridgeshire, he came to Boston with his parents in 1925. He attended Park Board School,
before going onto BGS.

For a number of years he played cricket for the Old Boys XI and until this year (2001) he regularly attended the school remembrance services. After serving in the RAF during the Second World War he returned to Boston, where he will be best remembered as organist at the old Pump Square Methodist Church. He was also associated with the local St John Ambulance Cadet section.

In the 1960's the family moved to [[Wikipedia:Chippenham|Chippenham]], Wiltshire, where Lucy and he became wardens of Avonside sheltered retirement accommodation and he was an organist at the Causeway Methodist Church.

Following his retirement, he and his wife returned to Boston. They lived in Kingsway until his wife's death in 1996. He leaves three sons, Cam, Graham and Bob, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mike died on 27th February after several years of poor health, aged 78. He was born in [[Wikipedia:Kirton, Lincolnshire|Kirton]] and lived there until he left BGS in 1941. From school he joined the RAF. The war was on and he was sent to Canada to train as a bomber pilot. Back in the UK he flew over 30 missions over enemy territory. On one mission his Halifax bomber was hit and on fire and he managed to urge it back to base. For this he was awarded the [[Wikipedia:Distinguished Flying Cross (United Kingdom)|Distinguished Flying Cross]].

When he was demobbed he went up to Oxford in 1946 to read English. In 1949 he joined the teaching staff at [[Wikipedia:Farnham Grammar School|Farnham Grammar School]] (later [[Wikipedia:Farnham College|Farmham VIth Form College]]). In his early years there he set up the modern school library and with limited funds visited [[Wikipedia:Foyles|Foyles]] in London to purchase books.

At the school he was greatly loved and respected for his enthusiastic teaching of literature and his addiction to sport. He introduced play reading at the school and he asked Dorothy lnman, Head of the Girls Grammar if she would allow some of the girls to take part. HE WAS REFUSED HIS REQUEST!

For many years he was editor of the school magazine The Farnhamian. He retired in 1982 and filled his time with amateur journalism, photography and travel. A few years ago he suffered a stroke but still took a daily walk and was always in good spirits.

He leaves his wife of 47 years (Ann), 2 sons, 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren.

F. T. Ryan, the Captain of Cricket, is to be congratulated on making 52 not out against Moulton, and so winning the first bat awarded by the Headmaster since 1935.

In the first match of the season against Spalding F. T. Ryan took the greatest number of wickets, but he did not always maintain his accuracy or his effectiveness in long spells.

At Sleaford he led the team brilliantly, but at other times he did not always handle the bowling and his field to the best advantage.

[A] misfortune befell the [school football] team when Ryan was injured against Sleaford, and did not return to the team until the last match of the season.

The School Mile was run on Wednesday, March 16th. There were only seven runners, many boys still being absent through influenza. The weather was fine but a strong breeze was blowing. Ryan soon overtook [[Jack Bates OBE|Bates]] who had received ten yards, and he led by several yards from [[Herbert Dodson|Dodson]] and Bates at the end pf the first lap. Ryan increased his lead on the next lap and Crow came into second place, followed by Woods and Dodson. The field was now well strung out, and this order was maintained until the end. Ryan won easily from Crow in the record time of five minutes thirteen and three-fifth seconds. The previous record set up by [[Norroy Vass|C. C. N. Vass]] in 1921, was five minutes twenty-one seconds.

F.T. Ryan accomplished the most outstanding feat of the day [Athletic Sports - Thursday 12th May] by breaking the record for the Half-mile by 10.2 seconds. [in 2 minutes 15.2 seconds]

A. H. ("Bert") Greenfield was the second of four brothers who played a memorable part in the life of the School, particularly in sporting activities. He was a fine all-round athlete, showing exceptional prowess as a footballer. He was a member of the eleven from 1926 to 1929, a time when football was unusually strong in the School, and he is particularly remembered as centre-half in the fine side of 1928-1929. The remarkable success of that brilliant forward line was in no small measure due to Greenfield's hard work as centre-half. In his last year at School he was a most successful house captain of [[Parry|Parry's]], infecting others with his keenness and having an unusual degree of authority. He was one of those who gave of their best to the School - [[Floreat Bostona (music)|"exempla qui dedere posteris."]] The [[Greenfield Cup]], presented to the School by the four brothers, will be a fitting memorial.

== Obituary ==

Alf, of Blackthorn Lane, Boston died at The Georgians Nursing Home at the age of 83. He had been ill for several years.

Boston born he married Pam Enderby in 1940. They spent nearly two years in the Hebrides where Alf had been posted as an officer in HM Customs and Excise.

When he was called up he trained in REME and was commissioned in the Royal Signals. He served in India and Java but was eventually invalided out because of failing health.

Back in ‘civvy street’ he returned to HM Customs and Excise and in due course became surveyor for Boston District until his retirement in 1972.

He had wide interests including origin of names, gardening, writing and sports. His favourite sports were cricket and snooker. He played for the Old Bostonian Cricket Team for many years.

He was awarded the Parry Gold Medal in 1934 and was always closely involved with the school not least as a foundation governor.

He leaves wife Pam, son Nicholas and daughter Stephanie.
