Mr Charles Kenneth Isaac, a former director of Oldrids for (m)any years, has died at his home in Horncastle Road, Boston after a long illness. He was 86.

Mr Isaac, whose wife Alvena died five months ago, took over oldrids with his brother Gus, now in his nineties, and they ran the store together from the 1920s to the 50s.

His parents had a successful department store in Kidderminster, in Worcestershire, and his father, Robert Isaac, bought Oldrids and brought his family to Boston in 1915.

A quiet, unassuming man, Mr Isaac was also something of an eccentric, and his large family of four sons and three daughters have many fond stories to tell of their father's endearing ways.

He was a keen swimmer, and regularly swam on Sunday mornings back and forth across the tidal River Haven, caring little for the shipping using the waterway.

He once dived off the Town Bridge for a bet and swam to the Sluice Bridge while his brother-in-law followed along the bank with his clothes.

And on another occasion the family recalls the amusement he caused in the store when he appeared with one trouser leg slit from top to bottom.

His explanation was that a motor cyclist riding past had caught and torn his clothing with the bike. And, true to form, he declined to go home and change, preferring to find a needle and thread and stitch up the tear himself with his leg propped on the shop counter.

A former pupil of Boston Grammar School, Mr Isaac was knowledgeable about aircraft, and towards the end of the war, at the age of nearly 40, he volunteered for the D-Day landings as a member of the [[Wikipedia:Royal Observer Corps|Royal Observer Corps]]. He worked as an observer to ensure that Allied planes were not shot down, and during this short period of war service his ship was blown up, and the partner with whom he was on duty was killed.

Mr Isaac was a keen member of the Rowing Club, an enthusiastic gardener, and a member of [[Wikipedia:Skirbeck#History|Holy Trinity Church]] for many years.

He and his family lived in Spilsby Road at one time, and he and his wife moved to their bungalow on Horncastle Road in 1967.

Mr Isaac leaves seven sons and daughters, three of whom are triplets. His eldest daughter, Ann Boyd, lives in Vancouver, the triplets are Charles Isaac, Jane Alsnas and Robin Isaac, all of Boston, and the three youngest of the family are Jill Russell, of Sibsey, and Garth and Rodney Isaac, of Boston. There are 15 grandchildren. Mr Isaac also leaves his brother Augustus (Gus) Isaac, of Willoughby Road, Boston, who is 95, and two sisters, Stella Isaac and Mary Crookall, who both live at Leigh-on-Sea, Essex.

The funeral is to take place tomorrow (Friday) at Holy Trinity Church at 1.30 pm, followed by burial in the cemetary. Family flowers only are requested.
