Charles died at the turn of the year at the age of 85.

After BGS he studied at Oxford. It was his intention to teach but instead he spent his working life as a loss adjuster in the family firm of Sharp and Son. He had lived in Skegness for the past 28 years.

He had always taken a keen interest in railways and was chairman of South East Lincolnshire Travellers Association (SELTA). The association campaigned for years, quietly but effectively, to ensure the continuation of local rail services.

It was after retirement that Charles was able to indulge his interest in railways to the full. He established local services on a strong basis, monitoring trains and passengers and passing on the information to Central Railways. Colin Robey, product manager of CR, paid tribute to Charles, saying that his suggestions were always practical and well thought out. Information gathered by SELTA meant that resources of CR could be adjusted to match demands. Mr Robey said "we will sadly miss him".

Charles was closely involved with Fydell House, the Guildhall and the history of Boston over many years. At one time he ran a weather station at [[Wikipedia:HM Prison North Sea Camp|North Sea Camp]] and was a server at Boston Stump for 35 years.

Charles leaves his wife Dorothy, two daughters, Carolyn and Rosemary and a granddaughter.
