David Smith, the highly respected and popular GP at Swineshead and Donington died suddenly at his home in March this year. He was 60 years old and had only the day before been discharged from Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, where he had undergone major heart surgery.

David was born in Boston and throughout his life had a strong attachment and affection for the town and area. He had a noteworthy career at BGS where he became Head Boy, was captain of cricket and gained excellent academic
honours.

From school he went to Kings College, London, to train as a doctor. Whilst there he was, on the playing fields, a fine rugby prop forward. He became President of the Hospital.

When qualified he returned to Lincolnshire, joining in partnership with Dr Dan Cope in Swineshead. The practice grew and by the time Dr Cope retired it covered both Swineshead and Donington. David then became the senior partner and with his partners and staff provided an exceptionally high standard of health care in the villages.

During his professional life he served on many representative bodies and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Practitioners, a fine distinction. He served on the British Medical Association and recently was secretary of the Lincoinshire Medical Committee.

For many years he served actively in the interests of BGS as a governor and was a dedicated member of the [[Old Bostonian Association|OBA]]. He was a welcome and familiar figure at the Association's annual dinner.

Outside medicine to which he was dedicated, he found time for a wide range of interests and hobbies:- he loved fishing and shooting, a keen philatelist, a gardener, collector of fossils, wine maker from grapes from his own vine, keeper of 800,000 bees (at the bottom of his garden). He contributed many articles to medical journals, was a past chairman of the Boston Round Table and Forty One Club, and was a founder member of LIVES.

David became ill in January this year when he collapsed at a meeting in Stamford. He underwent heart surgery at Papworth Hospital early in February. He was discharged and returned to his home in Swineshead. Sadly he died after only 24 hours.

Tributes to David and recognition of the major contribution he had made to health care were expressed by many, including friends, patients, Lincolnshire Health's chief executive, Brian Mayhew Smith, Dr David Baker, chairman of the Lincs MC and Ellen Wood, chief officer South Lincs Community Health Council. He was a popular doctor totally dedicated to the well being of his patients.

David was a devoted family man and leaves his wife of 36 years, Jean, two daughters, Catherine and Tessa, a son Derek and one grandchild.
