Obituary
Peter, of Shore Road, Freiston, died in Pilgrim Hospital in December. He was born in Freiston and lived and farmed in the area all his life.
He joined BGS in 1936, had a successful academic career and made his mark as an all-round sportsman.
On leaving school he joined the RAF in 1942 and was invalided out the following year. Returning to farming he nonetheless found ample time to take part in sports. He played for the Old Bostonians in football and cricket and captained the side for many years. He was also president of Freiston Cricket Club and Freiston Bowls Club.
After retiring from cricket he became a very keen golfer and was a member of Boston Golf Club and Seacroft Golf Club. He became captain of the Boston Club in 1972 and later its president from 1977 to 1988. He played off a handicap of 15.
He gave much of his time to education and council work. He was one of the instigators of the building of the Giles School, Old Leake of which he became a governor. He also served 35 years as a governor of Butterwick Primary School, 21 of them as chairman.
In 1958 he became a member of Freiston Parish Council and its chairman from 1963 to 1994. This led him into a whole succession of council commitments on the Holland County Council and Borough of Boston.
The business side of his life was devoted to farming and vegetable growing. Here again he gave generously of his time and energy voluntarily in the interests of the industry. He served on the Executive Committee of Boston NFU from 1964 and in 1966 was elected on to the NFU Headquarters Vegetable Committee. In 1977 he was elected chairman of the Central Horticultural Committee and was responsible for looking after the interests of some 20,000 growers which involved frequent trips to London and Brussels.
In 1982 he was awarded the CBE for services to the horticultural industry.
Peter leaves his wife Dulcie, son Peter, daughter Barbara, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His funeral service was held at Freiston Church followed by burial in the churchyard.
