Fives Court

There have been two fives courts built at Boston Grammar School, both of which were situated in the Mart Yard.

First Fives Court

The original fives court was built in the late 19th century, believed to be around 1871, at the south side of the Mart Yard. In 1904 it was demolished, and the first science block was erected in its place.

Second Fives Court

The second fives court was built in 1904, on the west side of the Mart Yard. It was an unusual-looking two-storey structure that, despite its original purpose, was used for a variety of different reasons throughout the 20th Century.

Around 1911 it was converted for use as a manual workshop for teaching carpentry. From 1920 it was used for regular classroom teaching.

In 1956, the building was converted into a CCF armoury, when the War Office took it over on lease at a peppercorn rental, and agreed to fund necessary alterations and periodic maintenance. After the CCF was disbanded in 1980, it was used by the school caretaker as a store.

The second fives court was demolished in late 2000 / early 2001, to make way for the third science block.
