William Arthur Staniland was educated at Boston Grammar School.
Obituary

Arthur died on 20 April this year in Welland Hospital, Spalding. aged 81.
At BGS he was outstanding at football and cricket.
When war came he joined the Royal Air Force and in 1940 trained as a navigator at Prestwick. There he met up with two other Old Bostonians - Matty Matson and George Wilson.
He was posted to a Blenheim Squadron and early in 1941 was shot down during a daylight raid. He was taken prisoner and for the next four years was held in Stalag Luft 3. Whilst there he was a prominent performer on the sportsground and displayed such talent that whenever he played virtually the whole camp, including the guards, turned out to witness his brilliance.
After the war he became a manufacturer's agent and had his own business in Bristol.
He was a member of Probus, the Air Crew Association, Spalding Men's Social Club and Spalding Golf Club.
The funeral service at Spalding Parish Church was conducted by the Rev A Fiddyment.
