Robert H Garnham was educated at Boston Grammar School where he won the Parry Gold Medal in 1941. He received an Open Exhibition in Natural Sciences at St Catharine's College, Cambridge and was awarded a State Scholarship. The 1942 issue of The Bostonian reported that he had been placed in the First Class in the the Preliminary Examination in the Natural Sciences Tripos, Part One.
