James Edward Lawrence Nowers is/was a teacher of %subject% at Boston Grammar School.
Nowers was one of almost 5,000 clergy who signed a “Remonstrance Addressed to the Archbishops and Bishops of the Church of England” which protested the decision of the ecclesiastical courts in the case of Herbert v. Purchas, in which John Purchas, curate of St. James’ Chapel, Brighton, was ordered to cease the use of vestments, candles, incense etc. during church services.[1]
