Povey came to BGS a year early and struggled through to three years in the upper sixth. Povey's extra-curricular activies were:

- amateur dramatics
After BGS
Povey studied first Maths at Plymouth Polytechnic then transferred to Brunel University to do Computer Science. He did industrial training initially with British Gas in London and then twice with Burroughs Corporation in Feltham. After graduating, he worked for Burroughs in Feltham and Cumbernauld, then Digital Equipment Corporation in Reading and then Nashua, New Hampshire. While at Digital in Reading, he was News Editor for the VOGON News Service. He left Digital at the end of 1993 and worked for a number of IT companies in a variety of roles until retiring from full-time work in 2018.
Current Activities
He is tour manager and web master for both Ray Cooper and the John Jones Trio. He is secretary and web master for the Howard Foundation charity. He has also provided two interviews to the Archives of IT website.
