This prize was named after Arthur Grocock (1879-1957), an alumnus who attended BGS from January 1891 to 1895.

After leaving school, he later became a senior partner in the local legal firm of "Grocock and Staniland". In 1984, Grocock and Staniland merged with Frost, Gunning and Co. to form Ringrose and Co - now known as Ringrose Law.

The prize was first awarded in 1962, and is believed to have been last listed, though not awarded, in 1973.
