William Goodwin was chosen to replace Samuel Winter but he cannot have accepted as, five months later, in June 1631, George Atkinson was appointed "in the roome and place" of Winter. When Goodwin was appointed, 43s.5d was paid out for money spent by Richard Westland, an alderman, and John Browne, who became mayor at this time, "in a journey to Yorksheire aboute a Schoolmaster". Westland was next directed to go to Cambridge, at the corporation's expense, "unto Mr Knowles for direccions about a Schoolemaster". And on the day before Atkinson's election, it was agreed that Thomas Coney should "ride to Lincoln to inquire about the fitnes of the Schoole Maisters proposed to this howse".
