George Smith Bagley attended Boston Grammar School from 1936 until 1941. While he was not born in Boston he lived there for over fifty years, working as a journalist for forty of them. As he recorded events of local importance over that time he developed an interest in the town's past.
He authored the first comprehensive history of Boston Grammar School, entitled Floreat Bostona, which was published in 1985. The George Bagley Prize is named in his honour.
