Lionel Anthony Ripoll was educated at Boston Grammar School (c1938-c1943).
Lionel's father, José, was Spanish and was a fruit merchant. José was naturalized as British, taking his oath of allegiance on 4 November 1937. The family lived at Cuatro Caminos, Freiston Low Road, Fishtoft (now Eastwood Road).
