Figgis came about in the summer of 1994 when former members of Vehicle Derek found themselves back in Boston for a short while and decided to make some music together. Named after James Bolam's character in the comedy show 'Only When I Laugh', drummer Glen Ernest Williams from Spalding was added to complete the line-up. The band played twice, once at The Birds, Spalding and again at Boston Indian Queen, in shows organized by the then developing South Lincolnshire emo scene. The set consisted of reworked Vehicle Derek songs, some originals written that summer, and a handful of ska-punk cover versions.
