Christopher Phillips arrived at Boston Grammar School as a teacher of Mathematics in 1979. Based on his own interest in stamp collecting, and the fact that he had run such clubs since he was a boy in Tunbridge Wells, he started a Philatelic Society. He encouraged members to be active in their stamp collecting hobby, ran stamp auctions, and took boys on trips to other clubs and to philatelic events.
He published his own First Day Covers for all current British Stamps under the brand name Philcovers, with the designs originally by Chris himself. Quickly he made it into a competition. Members of the society were asked to design a cover. If a design was chosen, then the artist received a copy of the cover as a prize (two copies if a colour separation was produced, thus saving some work in reproduction).
After Chris Phillips' departure from the school in 1982, John Clutterbuck took charge of the society. Chris Phillips' Philcovers First Day Cover service was still available, and contact was kept via Michael Maltby.
