Figgis came about in the summer of 1994 when former members of Vehicle Derek found themselves back in Boston for a short while and decided to make some music together. Figgis was first iteration of the band (named after James Bolam's character in the comedy show 'Only When I Laugh') but in September a gig was offered at Boston's Indian Queen supporting local emo band Tribute. With Del Howes out of town the other three band members rehearsed as a three piece using the name Tilman.
