Frank Harrison Hill (c1831-1910) was a BGS alumnus, and the nephew of Pishey Thompson. He later became the editor of the London-based 'Daily News' from 1869 to 1886. Charles Dickens had been the newspaper's first editor, in 1845.

When he died in 1910, Hill left £1,000 to the BGS trustees to be used to found a Frank Harrison Hill Exhibition for one or more subjects.

This prize was originally a leaving scholarship, awarded every three years. In recent decades it has been awarded annually to the winner of the Parry Gold Medal.
