"Bill" Bastick was born at Bishop's Castle, Shropshire where his father was a teacher. He attended Grammar Schools at Crewkerne, Sherborne and Southampton then gaining a B.A. at London. His teaching posts before BGS were at Uttoxeter, Sedburgh and Anglesey.

He was organist and choirmaster at Kirton Parish Church from 1926 to 1947.
