Early in 1915 he tried to join the army, aged 15. In January 1916 he was accepted and soon in France with 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Six months later on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, he was killed during his battalion’s attack at La Boisselle.
