Born on 15 May 1899, Thomas Arthur Waterfield attended Boston Grammar School from May 1910 to December 1913. He then joined his father in the family drapery business. Early in 1915 he tried to join the army, aged 15. In January 1916 he was accepted and soon in France with 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Six months later on 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, he was killed during his battalion’s attack at La Boisselle.
A letter received by his father informed the family that Thomas met his death through the effects of an enemy shell which, according to all accounts, "blew him to pieces!”
