Alan Howard was appointed to teach art and woodwork at Boston Grammar School in 1901, following the death of his father, George T Vernon Howard who had been Drawing master since 1861. He remained at the school until his retirement in 1937.
Howard, who had been a student at Boston Grammar School, entering the school in 1888, not only succeeded his father in his post at Boston Grammar School, but also took over from him as head of the Boston School of Art. His teaching career was broken only when he served with the Royal Flying Corps in France during the First World war.
On his retirement, Arthur Hill wrote that he was:
...unusually popular and efficient... those who worked with him will not forget what they owed to his cheery optimism and willing co-operation.
After Howard's death, aged 77, in June 1954, the Bostonian declared:
His cheerfulness, his eager delight in the arts, and above all his joie de vivre helped to form a personality which will be missed by all who knew him.
