First presented in 1925, the Beaulah Cup was awarded to the winning team of inter-House chess matches. In later years it was awarded to individuals.

It was named after John Beaulah, who had played a formative role in Boston's chess club, and who served as Mayor and Alderman of the town in the 1920s.

An account of the 1925 Speech Day in the Boston Guardian makes the following reference:

"The Chess Club was indebted to Ald. Beaulah (whose absence they deplored), for a valuable cup, which was won by Briggs'."
