Born on 15 May 1899, Thomas Arthur Waterfield attended Boston Grammar School from May 1910 to December 1913. He then joined his father in the family drapery business. Early in 1915 he tried to join the army, aged 15. In January 1916 he was accepted and soon in France with 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment.
