Medford was a short-lived band put together by former BGS students in 1997 who wrote songs together but never performed, but would become the catalyst for Benny several years later.

Wanting to do something musical during the summer of 1995, Del Howes and Andy Sandall decided to swap instruments around and form a band with old school friend Alan Boyce, who had taken over bass playing duties in the BGS Jazz Band from Sandall a few years earlier. The band had two long song-writing and practice sessions but never played a live show despite numerous offers from other local bands who knew the members. The songs written in these sessions made it onto cassette and were forgotten about for several years.

After the demise of Vehicle Derek in 2001 both Sandall and Howes wanted to continue writing and performing music so set about forming a new band that would become Benny. After one practice as a three piece, they asked Boyce if he would join and quickly scoured the tape of Medford practising to find any songs that would work for the new band. Benny songs 'Parks & Gardens', 'Karl's Dad's Shed' and the cover of Jazz Band standards Margie and Dr. Jazz all came from the original Medford practice tapes.
