Obituary

By Rev Dick Westland who conducted the funeral at Boston Crematorium - some handwritten sections are not clear

Peter Malcolm Kitchen died 17.08.07 a sudden shock death of a special man, officer and gentleman. Much loved by family and many friends. When someone like Peter dies we are particularly conscious of the fact that he cannot be replaced. Our world is poorer for this loss. He gave out so much to many and he was a kind of symbol of the good life in our community.

Born in the Cottage.. Sutterton and to Sutterton St Mary's School, then to BGS, where I remember him before I left. A beginning of a friendship special over many years. A BGs head boy, then he left for a language degree at Bristol Univ[ersity] and did a 1 yr student exchange in Hanover. Next to Jerby, Isle of Man for 2 yrs Nat[ional] Service for RAF officer training education, then 1 yr in Garten Kirchen and Oldenburg then Bristol Univ[ersity] for his PGCE. A most... and reliable RAF Education offiver. In 1958 he moved to Hamm-Windsor School as Housemaster. In 1981 he returned to the UK and Vale of Ancholme School in Brigg, Lincs. He retired to look after his wife Margaret in 1991 when our friendship was... to be renewed and with his wife Margaret Elizabeth. They married on 21.5.1959 in Virginia their son... shared many wonderful family experiences many... Peter's humourous characteristics e.g. any family visitors had to see the... whose grandad's initials BRK were scratched on the wall?and to see where the Dambusters bombed.

Once brother Trevor visited and he and Peter went out at 8pm in Germany to post a letter. They arrived back at 4am! Peter removed... they just lifted easily off and he swapped them around confusion reigned esp[ecially] with the bathroom door.

One holiday in Avignon, France with a Mistral wind, Peter leaned well over a bridge and his hat fell off. He was restrained trying to retrieve this. Margaret said she never liked the hat anyway!

Peter moved to Heckington when he knew Margaret had Alzheimers symptoms and eventually she moved to Pilgrim Hosp[ital] where I was Chaplain and enjoyed seeing them both again. When a year later Margaret moved to the splendid St John's Home for 9 yrs until she died... 16 years Peter visited nearly every day comforting, feeding, washing and giving in such a loving way. It was a joy to see Margaret respond. The family was also... in support and I know would like to thank St John's... staff and the... Boston Alzheimers Soc[iety]. Peter helped them at local Heckington pensioners meetings. A Boston GS old boy he was a good friend to... He loved to read and see aircraft was overjoyed when he went to an air show in [the] USA and experienced also a ride in the Memorial Flight Lancaster. Latterly his... to the 3 families helped so much with experiences and ... the thrill of seeing William and Louis his grandchildren playing f[oot]ball practice. Peter played at BGS and univ[ersity] team.

Peter was loved by many people as witnessed in a large number today. The privilege of loving another person deeply involves the risk of separation. We cannot love ... without facing this risk. It is one of life's unchangeables esp[ecially] for Christians! But though parting is real and painful, we can count on the resources ... in Jesus as grief foes its slow work. The resurrection of Jesus Christ can be a reality entered into by those who have physically died. And it can be a sign of hope for those who have suffered bereavement. With prayer and the help of Jesus our life can be renewed and deep grief can give way to acceptance and hope. We thank God Peter was not left to suffer on. We now pray he may be with Margaret his heart's desire. May he rest in heavenly peace - Amen
