Richard Slator was educated at Boston Grammar School. He won the Parry Gold Medal in 1891.
He was son of Thomas Slator, guano merchant and ship chandler, and Elizabeth (née Aspland).
After the death of William White in 1912, the school advertised for a new headmaster. One of the 178 applicants was Richard Slator (aged 39) who was second master at Ipswich School (mathematics, science). He had examined BGS on a number of occasions (1907, 1908, 1909). The successful candidate was James William Dyson.
