Robert John Reynolds was educated at Boston Grammar School (1867-1877).

The son of auctioneer Alfred Reynolds who lived in Broadfield House, Boston and later at 12 Wide Bargate, Reynolds was the second winner of the Parry Gold Medal. He was admitted to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge in 1877 where he held an Open Scholarship. He was placed in the Second Class in the Classical Tripos, gaining his BA in 1881 and his MA in 1886. He rowed for the college eight, was a good cricketer and all-round sportsman.

He became Principal of St Catherine's School, Tenby and later lived at Lissenden Gardens, Highgate. He died at his daughter, Dr Margaret Reynolds' house in Wolverhampton in 1942, Aged 84.
