Press Coverage

The following article appeared in the Lincolnshire Standard on 8 January 1965.

New name on beat scene — it's Uther Pengragon!

Out with the old and in with the new - that's the' spirit of New Year and it found a parallel on the Boston beat scene this year. OUT, after a steady two-year run went the Cossacks, one of the better and most firmly established "junior"; outfits: IN, almost quietly, came Uther Pendragon, writes Andy Bell.

And let's get one thing straight from the start. Uther Pendragon isn't the name of one man (how could one man shoulder a tag like that anyway?) but four men. They are Grammar School students Huw Champion, Ralph Bradley, George Auchterlonie and Bruin Browne.

The fact that they will doubtless be accused of 'doing a Manfred' doesn't seem to worry these boys, who are making a sincere bid to become known as Boston's first authentic blues group.

What they like

You can't forget that name can you? And the foursome can relax in the 100 per cent certainty that nowhere in the world is there a group with the same name as theirs.

They made their first public appearance at the Memorial Hall on New Year's Day as support to the Korvairs, and previously had performed at a number of private parties. Their approach is refreshing In that they are obviously determined to play the sort of material they like, regardless of what anybody else likes.

Highly dangerous - but no less praiseworthy. Their repertoire currently includes the customary stack of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley numbers. but they assure me that they aren't gong to learn any more.

Now they are concentrating on material featured by blues merchants like the late Cyril Davies, Sonny Boy Williamson and Jimmy Reed.

They are all blues fans. with great admiration for home-grown bluesmen like Long John Baldry, Georgie Fame and Rod Steward (sic). They don't wear stage-gear. "That's not a gimmick—honestly." says drummer Huw "It's just that we can't afford any."

So look out for Uther Pendragon - all four of them!
