Jonathan Van-Tam

25 March 2023 – 6:30pm for 7:30pm

The Jakemans Community Stadium, Pilgrim Way, Wyberton, Boston, PE21 7NE

Guest speaker – Prof Sir Jonathan Van-Tam (BGS 1975-82)

On-line booking is now closed

As Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Jonathan Van-Tam became one of the nation’s best-known figures during the Covid-19 pandemic. We are delighted to announce that he will be the guest speaker at the 2023 OBA dinner.

The dinner will take place in the Nineteen33 banqueting suite at The Jakeman’s Stadium on Saturday 25th March 2023.

Jonathan’s ties to Boston Grammar School run deep. He himself is an old boy – attending the school between 1975 and 1982. His late father, Paul Van-Tam, taught Mathematics and Physics there between 1970 and 1980, later returning as a supply teacher in the 1990s. His younger brother Dominic also attended BGS.

Jonathan went on to graduate in medicine from the University of Nottingham in 1987. Specialising in influenza, antiviral drugs and pandemic preparedness he has spent much of his career in academia and the pharmaceutical industry.

Jonathan was appointed MBE in the 1998 New Year Honours for services to Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force. In 2017, he became a Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England which led to his leading role in the response to the pandemic and the daily briefings from 10 Downing Street where his metaphors, particularly those relating to train travel and football, brought him popular fame as well as widespread respect.

This exposure and his obvious involvement at the highest level in the pandemic response led to many honours including a Knighthood in the 2022 New Year Honours, and freedom of the Borough of Boston. Jonathan is of course well known as a keen supporter of Boston United, which makes the venue for this year’s dinner especially appropriate.

I’d like to book two tickets (self and spouse) to the 2023 dinner please. I assume a proper booking form will follow, with details of meal choices and payment.
    Many thanks.

      Hi Ian,

If you are an OBA member you should have received an email from Secretary Stephen Wood explaining how to book priority tickets. If you aren’t a member then booking will open sometime in the New Year. If you think you should have received details of priority booking but haven’t then contact Steve on secretary@bostonian.org.uk

      Thank you

      Simon
